Fort Donelson National Battlefield
Fort Donelson National Battlefield–located in Dover, Tennessee and New Concord, Kentucky–preserves two Civil War sites that were key in the campaign to bring both the Tennessee River and the Cumberland River under Union control. In battle now known as the first Union successes of the war, General Ulysses S. Grant and Flag Officer Andrew Hull Foote captured three Conferate forts and both rivers in the campaign. The capture of Fort Donelson and its garrison led to the Union capture of Nashville, Tennessee’s capitol and industrial center, giving the Union control over most of Tennessee.
