Historic Site: Narrows of the Harpeth

The Montgomery Bell Tunnel is a man-made water feature in Cheatham County, Tennessee, which directs water through a tunnel at a narrow portion of an oxbow on the Harpeth River. It is 290-feet long and runs through limestone rock. Built in 1819 by Montgomery Bell, it was the first full-scale water diversion tunnel built in the United States and is now a part of Harpeth River State Park. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1994.
